Science Of Skin Tags

Skin tags are a very common phenomenon that happens to your body.  Skin tags are also known as soft fibromas, fibroepithelial polyps, or acrochordons in scientific terms. The skin tags can occur on anybody and at any time, or any place. And yet, their occurrence cannot be considered to be sudden.

These skin tags are small pieces of skin that protrude from our normal skin surface. They hang from our skin with the help of a stalk called peduncle. These skin tags are mostly formed of collagen protein fibers, along with a tuft of capillaries.

Skin tags are often caused at places where are skin folds and has creases. These creases and fold have a lot of friction between them which causes the skin tags. This is why skin tags are commonly seen in people who have a lot of wrinkles or in the people who have a heavyweight. Expectant mothers are also prone to have skin tags. This is because there is a major too and fro of the skin at the creases and folds.

Skin tags have a high tendency to occur at selected places on your body.

  • Upper chest.
  • Eyelids.
  • Armpits.
  • Elbows.
  • Behind the neck.
  • Under the breasts.
  • The groins.

Skin tags don’t necessarily occur on these parts and could occur on other parts due to friction from clothes or even your jewelry.

Skin Tags Treatments:

Although skin tags are harmless and mostly benign, a lot of times, skin tags can make people conscious of their surroundings. They can are uncomfortable and could come in the way of their clothes and jewelry. Therefore they prefer the skin tag to be gone. There are many different methods to remove a skin tag. There are home remedies, clinical methods, and it is also possible to remove these skin tags all by your self. A few of these methods can be dangerous, while others can be very helpful and effective.

Self Removal:

People try to remover these skin tag with the help of different instruments present in their houses.

  • They try to either burn it and then make it fall.
  • The skin tags are also frozen, the broken off from the skin surface,
  • Teeth floss is sometimes used to tie a knot on the skin tag to block its blood flow. Blocking its blood flow will make its cells die, and then the tag will fall off in a few days.
  • Some people even try to cut off the skin tags with sharp instruments.

Most of these methods are not supposed to be practiced at home, because they can be very dangerous and can also be infectious. These methods could also harm the skin surrounding your tag.

At The Clinic:

There are various methods by which the doctor will remove the skin tag. These processes even though safe, can be a lot of work. You will have to go for appointments, as well as there is permission needed from an authority to get skin tags removed. Which is only allowed if the skin tag is highly problematic.

The methods used at the clinics are:

  • Cauterization: the doctors burn or freeze these tags from the skin. This method is used to seal off a wound.
  • Cryosurgery: this process requires small amounts of liquid nitrogen. This nitrogen is applied to the skin. It will freeze the skin tag, which will then be removed by the doctor.
  • Surgery: The area around the skin tag is anesthetized. Then the doctor cut the skin tag off, with the help of sterile scissors.
  • A dermatologist could also help you with removing these skin tags.

At Home:

There are some natural ingredients that could help with skin tag removal. Since they are natural, there are very fewer chances of allergies or side effects. These treatments can also be done if you do not prefer doctors. These ingredients can probably be found in your cabinet.

  • Apple cider vinegar: soak a cotton bud in the vinegar and apply it to the tag. Leave it for fifteen to twenty minutes. Then wash it. Repeat this procedure for a few weeks. The acids in the vinegar will kill the tissues present in the skin tag. It will then decay and fall off.
  • Vitamin E: Aging could be a reason for your skin tags. Since vitamin E is an antioxidant that will fight the aging symptoms. Such as wrinkles, lines, and dark spots. By simply applying liquid vitamin E on the tag (daily).
  • Garlic: this will be easily available in your kitchen. Garlic will help reduce the inflammation caused due to aging. Crush the garlic, and apply a small piece over the tag. Then reinforce it with a bandage. Keep a new piece of garlic every day, and along with a new dressing. By doing this regularly, the skin tag will shrink in a few weeks.
  • Banana peel:  Apply the peel over the skin tag and cover it with a bandage. This will dry the skin tag over time. The skin tag will then fall off.
